What a Horror Fan Burns While Watching: PRINCE OF DARKNESS (1987) - Whispered Echos

The devil is a liquid.

That's the whole pitch of John Carpenter's strangest film, and it's enough. In the basement of an abandoned Los Angeles church, behind a door sealed for centuries, sits a canister of swirling green fluid — and inside it, the essence of Satan himself. The son of something older. Something anti.

A priest brings in a physics professor and his grad students to study it. Science versus the abyss, and the abyss brought math. The liquid starts choosing vessels. The students start changing. And every one of them keeps having the same dream — a grainy transmission, a voice saying this is not a dream, you are receiving a broadcast from the future — a warning sent backward through time, because the future is screaming and this is the only frequency that reaches.

Carpenter called this the middle of his Apocalypse Trilogy, between The Thing and In the Mouth of Madness, and it's the bleakest of the three: evil as physics, faith as a containment protocol, and a mirror that might be a door.

What we're burning: the Aquarius Oil Candle ($22). Aquarius is the strange waters, the sign of the weird transmission — and the Antichrist in this movie is literally a fluid. Let it burn low while the room smells like something older than churches.

Burn it for the ones who dream in broadcasts.

The future is trying to warn you. Light something and listen.
